Do you need a new mattress? It’s shocking just how many people sleep on a below average mattress every night. Your mattress plays a very important role in your health and the health of your back is largely determined by how well you sleep every night. Since a new mattress is quite an expensive item, most people tend to look past the need for a new one in favor of other luxuries. If you think of it this way – you spend as much as one third of your life on your mattress. Don;t you think you owe it to yourself to get a good one?
So, how can you tell if you need a new mattress? There are a number of guidelines you can use but there are no hard and fast rules these days. The quality of mattresses vary greatly and therefore the lifetime of it varies as well. Lets quickly look at some basic guidelines you can use.
- If you wake up feeling tired and sore then you are probably sleeping on a mattress that is not providing adequate support. You are probably waking up often without even being aware of it which might be an explanation for waking up not feeling completely rested.
- If you have persistent back problems then your mattress may have something to do with it. Obviously you need to consult your doctor as well but a new mattress may be in order to give your back more support while you sleep.
- If your mattress is more than 10 years old then its probably too old. Some high quality models can last that long but for most people this is the end of your bed’s lifespan.
- If you have persistent health issues that is unusual then there is a possibility that mold and bed mites are making you sick. This is quite common amongst kids and is something that you need to keep in mind as a potential cause.
